FISHING IN KOLA, USSR
Welcome to Atlantic salmon Central – Kola Peninsula
  • World’s best Atlantic salmon fishing
  • Pretty river, waterfalls and rapids, great fly water
  • Amazing Arctic plants and wildlife
  • Short drive from airport – no helicopters
  • First class lodge, great cooking,
  • Fish any time day or night.

The Kola is a sort of fishing wonderland. Opened up to foreign anglers after the collapse of communism, its rivers have the most prolific populations of Atlantic salmon in the world. Many of the Kola rivers, flowing down gentle gradients to the sea, get huge runs of salmon around 7 lbs. But the northern rivers have rapids and waterfalls, and only big strong salmon can get up them. The Kola in particular is widely considered to be the most challenging, and the most interesting, river on the Kola Peninsula.

The Kola flows down to the sea at Murmansk. Thanks to the Gulf Stream this area, 300 km north of the Arctic circle, is a completely untypical arctic territory. You get attractive mixed forests rather than tundra, interesting birdlife, and many unique plants. (The plant most familiar to fishermen is perhaps the yellow-flowered water butterfly, which anticipates the falling river levels and actually starts flowering while still submerged.) There

are attractive all-wooden villages in the region, their ancient wooden churches miraculously preserved in the dry arctic air.
